Winter Home Security Checks
With longer nights, it’s no surprise that we see more break-ins over winter. Every home is at risk of a break-in so it’s important to take out security measures and double-check them before the cold nights close in. The last thing you want is a break-in over Christmas or to start off the new year.
Here are winter security checks for your home.
Check locks and doors
It’s a good idea to give all entrances and windows a once over to ensure they’re still sturdy and secure. Burglars will look for weak spots in your home to gain easy entry so make sure all the doors are shut and locked properly and can’t be opened with a little bit of force. It’s a good idea to upgrade your locks if yours are over 10 years old as they tend to experience a lot of wear and tear. This will not only prevent break-ins but also ensure you don’t get locked out in the cold because of a jammed lock.
Make it look like someone’s home
In the dark evenings, it’s more obvious when someone isn’t home because all the lights are off. Leave a lamp on when you go out or set one up on a timer so that it always looks like someone is home. Christmas lights are also great for this as you can set them up on a timer and it’s more difficult for a burglar to tell if someone is home and they will be deterred away from your property. Another tactic is leaving a radio or tv playing to create some noise, if you have pets, they may also enjoy this instead of silence.
Close your blinds
Leaving your blinds and curtains open creates an invitation for burglars to peek in and see if there’s anything worth taking. It also makes it much easier for thieves to watch what you do and get a sense of your routine, such as when you leave in the morning or when you go to bed. Closing your blinds just gives you a little bit of extra security and will make you feel safer.
Prepare for your winter holiday
If you’re heading out on a ski holiday or going to visit family over the winter, make sure you take adequate precautions to protect your property while you’re gone. This includes giving someone you trust a spare key in case of emergencies and asking them to keep an eye on your property while you’re gone. Timed lights will be very helpful in this situation and you can make it seem like someone is home while you’re gone.
