Anyone who has ever lost their keys knows how difficult it can be to manage things. If you’ve lost them once, you probably made at least one copy to have extras for the future. You may also have a question – how many copies of your keys should you have?

Read on for all you need to know.

How Many Car Keys Should You Have?

Car keys may be rather complex to copy, as the systems these days are more complicated to replicate. The keys connect to the computer in the vehicle and this means you need a locksmith who can replicate this type of key. Older car keys are easier to copy.

Once you’ve found someone who can duplicate the keys for your vehicle, you should aim to make two spare keys. One should be kept in your home, but you will want to give the other to someone you trust implicitly. If you are in a situation where you have either lost your keys or locked them inside your vehicle, you can call the backup person to bring your extra key.

Having extra copies of your keys made will save you a lot of time and money. If you lose your key without backups, you will end up paying a lot for the car company to authorise and link more keys for you. They charge a premium for this, but you will find it is easier to just have spare keys made ahead of time in case you lose them.

How Many House Keys Should You Have?

When it comes to house keys, you probably don’t want too many floating around. If someone ends up getting a key, they could end up with access to your home. To prevent this, you should limit access to your keys.

Ideally, every person in the home will have their own key. You should also have an extra key in case of an emergency. This key may be left with a trusted friend or neighbour.

If you have any issues with your keys being stolen or lost, it’s often a good idea to change your locks, particularly if you suspect nefarious activity. This will of course require that you replicate these new keys to ensure everyone has the ability to get into the house. To avoid this, ensure that everyone in the building is aware of how important it is to take care of their keys.

Looking for someone to copy your keys? You’ll definitely want to talk to Campbell and McGovern Locksmiths. We can duplicate your keys, whether they are vehicle or house keys.
